Aloncaws Mediation was started by Fiona, who is a registered Family Dispute Resolution Provider, with a depth of experience as both a lawyer and mediator. As a lawyer of 16 years with experience in both regional and city areas of Queensland, she has worked extensively with families experiencing disputes around parenting, property and child support matters. She also has a broad legal experience outside of family law including in particular employment matters and working with faith based charities and not-for-profits.
Experienced in dealing with complex disputes, Fiona understands the realities that face families and businesses who are in dispute, and the possible consequences if matters can not be resolved. Fiona has been an Independent Children’s Lawyer for 10 years, and has expertise in navigating the complexities of parenting post-separation with a focus on the wellbeing of the children in the family. This experience has included working in specialist multi-disciplinary teams alongside social workers and psychologists.
As a business owner, and farmer, Fiona also understands the commercial realities and challenges around resolving financial matters – particularly in regional areas where services can be few and far between.
Fiona describes her mediation approach as a tailored approach for each situation that borrows from a number of mediation styles. Primarily facilitative in approach, she prefers to create a space and structure where both parties can work through issues and resolve them in creative ways to meet the needs of both parties and any children. Although willing to give a view about possible range of consequences if the matter is not resolved, she is firmly of the view that no one knows your situation better than you – you are the experts – and she loves to work with you to hear your concerns and meet your needs. Fiona has been intrigued by and borrows from the narrative mediation model where appropriate to seek to move past a purely transactional settlement to effect a move away from conflict. This allows the best opportunity for all participants to reach agreement that meets the needs of everyone involved - not just meeting the needs of the lawyers!
Fiona is available to undertake face to face mediations in Lismore, and south east Queensland, and is comfortable undertaking mediations by phone or Zoom where suitable.
